Proxies Are Not Working: Troubleshooting Common Issues

Updated yesterday

If you’re experiencing issues with your proxies, don’t worry! This article covers common reasons and solutions to help you get back on track.

Webshare Account and Subscription Issues

If none of your proxies are connecting, here are a few things to check:

Proxy Configuration Issues

Some common configuration errors include:

  • Outdated proxy list Ensure your proxy list is current. Update your list if you are using a program requiring manual uploads. Tip: Avoid errors like "no_proxies_allocated (407)" by configuring proxies in a backbone connection. Learn more: Why are my proxies getting replaced?, Backbone connection

  • Proxy Maintenance and Reliability If your proxies have been unreliable or timing out recently, it could be due to maintenance on the provider’s side. For example, a large number of US proxies might undergo maintenance, causing temporary connection disruptions. These issues are typically resolved quickly by the provider. If you continue to experience timeouts, confirm the current status of your proxies with your provider.

  • Authentication Make sure proxies are authenticated through either:

  • Proxy credentials

  • IP authentication

Using incorrect credentials or IPs can cause connection errors. Learn more: How to change proxy credentials, How to authenticate proxies by IP, How to authorize multiple IPs

Connectivity Issues

These are the most frequent connectivity issues:

  • High Latency Latency depends heavily on your network and where you're connecting to and from. The greater the distance between your location and the server, the higher the latency you might be experiencing. Tip: Use direct connection to decrease the latency and choose proxies closest to your physical location. Learn more: How to connect using the Direct connection method?, How do I use the converted IP as the proxy address instead of the domain?

  • Unstable Connection Connection stability is highly affected by the quality of your network. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can take:

  • Switch proxy protocols.

  • Disable privacy tools (Antivirus/VPN/ad-blocker).

  • Try using a different program to configure the proxies.

  • Check connection stability without proxy.

  • Test the proxies on a different network.

Tip: Add High-Priority Network feature to your plan and prioritize your requests. Learn more: What does a high-priority network mean?<

  • Tool-Specific Proxy Timeout Errors Sometimes, proxies may appear healthy in a dashboard but time out when used in specific tools, such as proxy management software or browsers. This issue often stems from how the tool handles proxy connections rather than the proxies themselves.

  • Verifying Proxy Functionality To determine whether the issue lies with the proxies or the tool:

  1. Test the proxies outside the tool using methods like curl or a regular browser.

  2. If the proxies work elsewhere, troubleshoot the tool by:

    • Updating to the latest version.

    • Removing and re-adding the proxies.

    • Verifying proxy settings.

    • Testing with a different proxy manager or browser.

  • Addressing Application Configuration Issues If connections work temporarily after switching proxies and then time out again, the issue may be with the application. Common causes include:

  • The application keeping old connections open.

  • Sessions not refreshing properly. To resolve this, review and correct the application’s timeout and session handling configurations./a>

  • No Internet connection If you're unable to access the internet when using a proxy, there are several common issues that may be causing the problem. Here's what you can do:

  • Check if proxy connection protocol is set to TCP

  • Test your network connection without a proxy

  • Clear Browser Cache

  • Check Firewall or Antivirus Settings

  • Restart your device and network

Target Website Issues

These are the typical issues related to your target website:

  • Proxies blocked by the target website

If you see the proxy request fails in your program, but returns as successful on the Activity page, the issue is related to the target website.

  • Target website is blocked by us

If a certain website is blocked on our end, you will see "client_connect_forbidden_host (403)" errors in your account.

Tip: If you receive this error with Residential proxies, switch to Datacenter or Static Residential proxy type.

  • Invalid target hostname

If the hostname you're trying to access is invalid, you will see "target_connect_resolved_failed" errors in your account.

Tip: Make sure the address you're accessing is in IPv4.

Best Practices for Proxy Management

  • Regularly update your proxy list to avoid using outdated proxies.

  • Test proxies in multiple environments to isolate issues.

  • Use tools and applications that support robust proxy management features.
